The Boots
A bold, head-turning pair of vintage Nocona boots constructed entirely in genuine ostrich patchwork — from the full-quill vamps all the way up through the shafts. Every square inch of these boots is covered in real ostrich leather, pieced together in a striking grid pattern that showcases the bird’s incredible range of textures: the raised quill bumps of the body on the vamps, and the varied smooth, leg, and textured sections on the shafts. All dyed a deep, glossy black for a monochromatic look that’s both exotic and understated.
The full-quill ostrich vamps display the prized raised-quill pattern — dense, prominent bumps in a high-gloss black finish that catches the light beautifully. Above the vamps, the shafts are constructed from ostrich patchwork panels — rectangular sections of ostrich in varying textures (smooth, leg, and lightly quilled) stitched together in a clean grid with tonal zigzag stitching at the seams. The result is a boot that’s covered head-to-toe in genuine ostrich, with natural textural variation that gives each panel its own character. The pointed snip toe, stacked Western heel, and leather pull straps complete the silhouette. Inside, the golden buttercup leather lining and the “NOCONA BOOTS / Made in USA” oval label with style 92477 confirm the pedigree.
Full Ostrich Patchwork — Why It Matters
Most “ostrich” boots use the quilled skin only on the vamp, with standard leather shafts above. A full ostrich patchwork boot uses genuine ostrich on the entire boot — vamps and shafts — which requires significantly more skin and more labor to piece together. The patchwork technique allows the maker to utilize multiple sections of the bird (body, leg, smooth areas) in a mosaic pattern, creating a visually rich, all-exotic boot that’s genuinely uncommon.
Nocona & Ostrich
Nocona Boots was founded in 1925 by Enid Justin — the daughter of H.J. “Daddy Joe” Justin, founder of the Justin Boot Company. When her brothers moved the family business to Fort Worth, Enid stayed behind in Nocona, Texas, and built her own legacy. For decades, Nocona produced some of the finest exotic boots in the country, and their full-ostrich work — backed by the golden buttercup lining and the Made in USA stamp — represents the brand at its best.
The Extra-Wide Width
At 8.5 EEE (3E), these are an exceptionally rare find in the secondary exotic market. Wide-footed buyers know the struggle of finding quality exotics in their size — most vintage pairs top out at D or E width. A triple-E in full ostrich patchwork is genuinely uncommon and will be a welcome discovery for the right buyer.
Condition
These boots are in good vintage condition with honest wear. The full-quill ostrich vamps are intact with the quill pattern well-defined and a glossy black finish; there is creasing across the instep and honest scuffing/wear at the toes consistent with use (see close-up photos). The ostrich patchwork shafts are supple with the grid seams intact and the tonal zigzag stitching secure throughout; some panels show the natural surface crackling/aging that ostrich develops over time. As shown in the sole photos, the leather soles display moderate wear from use and the rubber heel caps are intact. The golden interior lining and Nocona label are clean and legible. Overall a structurally sound, well-cared-for pair with plenty of life left.
