1940s Tony Lama Flame Stitch — Men’s 8.5 D

An early El Paso classic — honest 1940s Tony Lamas with razor flame stitching and the kind of patina you can’t fake.

Era & Build

  • Maker: Tony Lama, El Paso, Texas
  • Era: 1940s
  • Construction: Full leather construction with pegged leather soles and stacked leather heels
  • Toe: Narrow round / early western profile
  • Heel: Underslung cowboy heel
  • Details: Tall shaft with classic flame stitch pattern in tonal gold and oxblood thread; red piped collar; original pull tabs marked Tony Lama

These carry the slimmer, dressier silhouette you see in true pre-50s western boots — built before mass production softened the lines.

Size & Fit

  • Tagged: Men’s 8.5 D
  • True to size for a vintage D width.
  • As with most 1940s pairs, they run slightly narrower through the instep than modern boots — ideal for a true 8.5D or a snug 9D.

Condition

Condition Grade: Vintage B

  • Strong original leather with deep natural patina
  • Visible toe wear and scuffing consistent with age
  • Soles show wear but remain structurally sound
  • Heels capped (rubber top lifts present)
  • No major cracks, no structural separation

They’ve been worn — the right way — and aged beautifully.

Why We Love Them

This is the era that built Tony Lama’s name. Before the global expansion. Before the big box stores. These are from the period when Lama was still cementing his reputation boot by boot in El Paso.

The flame stitch is sharp. The profile is elegant. The leather has that burnished, reddish-brown tone that only 70+ years of life can create.

They don’t just look vintage.

They are the real thing.
