A handsome pair of vintage 1990s Larry Mahan boots featuring genuine full-quill ostrich vamps in a warm buttery tan, paired with rich two-tone brown leather shafts and elegant gold-and-tan eagle-scroll stitchwork. The ostrich vamps showcase the prized full-quill pattern — the dense field of raised quill bumps from the bird’s prime back hide that distinguishes premium ostrich from smooth-cut grades. The skin glows in a soft golden-tan with the supple, oily richness ostrich is famous for, extending across the vamps and up over the instep. The two-tone shafts pair a warm chestnut upper with a deeper chocolate-brown lower, divided by a scalloped seam and adorned with a flowing eagle-and-scroll stitch pattern in gold and tan thread that climbs each side. A tan leather inlay accent points up the front, and pull straps finish the collar.

Larry Mahan was a six-time World All-Around Champion cowboy who became a Western-wear icon, and the boots that carry his name are prized today for their quality and classic style. Ostrich remains one of the most desirable exotic leathers for boots — it’s remarkably soft and flexible (requiring almost no break-in), the natural oils help it resist cracking, and it only grows more beautiful with age. Full-quill is the premium center-cut, and a vintage Larry Mahan pair in this skin is a fantastic find.
Condition
These boots are in good vintage condition with honest wear. The full-quill ostrich vamps are supple and intact with the quill pattern well-defined and a rich glowing patina; there is some honest wear and light scuffing at the toes consistent with use (see photos). The two-tone brown leather shafts are supple with the gold/tan eagle stitchwork fully intact and crisp. As shown in the sole photos, the leather soles show significant honest wear from use but remain solid, and the stacked heels show wear with intact heel caps. The interior is clean. Overall a well-cared-for pair with plenty of life left.
