The Boots
A commanding pair of vintage Olathe Boot Company cowboy boots in genuine elephant leather — one of the rarest and most durable exotics ever used in bootmaking. The elephant vamps display the unmistakable pebbled, stippled grain unique to pachyderm hide: a dense, irregular texture of tiny raised bumps in a deep charcoal-grey that darkens and lightens naturally across the surface. No other exotic looks like elephant — it’s instantly recognizable to anyone who knows leather, and it’s virtually indestructible.

Above the elephant vamps, the tall black leather shafts are decorated with elegant grey/silver fleur-de-lis and scroll stitchwork — flowing, symmetrical patterns that wrap the front, back, and sides with understated sophistication. The tone-on-tone grey stitching against the black leather keeps the design refined rather than flashy, letting the exotic elephant skin be the star. The round toe, low stockman heel, and pull straps at the collar give these a classic working-cowboy silhouette — these are boots built for real life, not just show.

Inside, the cream leather lining carries the “246658 / 13 D / 226 / 246659” stamp, and the “Olathe Boot Company / Made in U.S.A.” cloth label with the American flag tag confirms the pedigree.

Olathe Boot Company — The Heritage
The Olathe Boot Company of Olathe, Kansas, carries one of the deepest legacies in American bootmaking. The company traces its roots to the Hyer family — C.H. Hyer is widely credited with making the very first purpose-built cowboy boot in the 1870s, and the Olathe operation continued that Kansas bootmaking tradition for over a century. Olathe boots were built for working cowboys, rodeo athletes, and ranchers who demanded durability, fit, and honest construction above all else. The name carries serious weight among boot collectors and working-Western enthusiasts.

Elephant Leather — Why It Matters
Elephant is one of the rarest and most restricted exotics in the boot world. Like sea turtle and anteater, elephant leather is heavily regulated under international wildlife trade laws, and genuine elephant-hide boots are no longer produced by most makers. The leather itself is legendary for its extreme durability — it’s one of the toughest hides on earth, resistant to cracking, scuffing, and water, and it develops a rich patina over decades of wear without breaking down. The distinctive pebbled grain is unlike any other exotic and is immediately recognizable.

Condition
These boots are in good vintage condition with honest wear. The elephant vamps are intact with the pebbled grain well-defined and the leather supple; there is honest creasing across the instep and natural wear/scuffing at the toes consistent with use (see close-up photos). The black leather shafts are supple with creasing and the grey/silver stitchwork fully intact and crisp. As shown in the sole photos, the leather soles display moderate-to-heavy wear from use and the rubber heel caps show honest wear. The cream interior lining and Olathe label are clean and legible. Overall a structurally sound pair with the elephant leather in solid shape and plenty of life left.
