The Boots
A striking pair of vintage Tony Lama cowboy boots in genuine pre-ban black sea turtle leather with rainbow-colored stitchwork on the shafts — a combination that’s as rare as it is visually commanding. The all-black foundation makes the multi-color thread work pop in a way that’s subtle from a distance but unmistakable up close.
The full sea turtle vamps display the hide’s signature large, raised scutes in deep black with a glossy finish. The scales are thick, dimensional, and heavily textured with the characteristic web-like veining between each tile that distinguishes genuine sea turtle from any imitation. The turtle leather wraps generously from the pointed toe up over the instep and around the heel counter, providing full exotic coverage across the entire lower boot. The scales are particularly large and well-defined on this pair, with excellent depth and sheen.
The black leather shafts carry elaborate feather and starburst stitchwork executed in rainbow thread — red, gold, green, pink, and blue lines trace the flowing leaf and lightning-bolt patterns across all four panels. Against the black leather, the multi-color stitching creates a subtle prismatic effect that shifts depending on the light and angle. The design is classic Tony Lama — sweeping fronds radiating from central spine lines with sharp angular accents — but the rainbow thread elevates it into something truly distinctive. Sea turtle leather has been banned from commercial trade under CITES and the Endangered Species Act for decades. These boots represent a material that is permanently unavailable for new production — no bootmaker on earth can legally source sea turtle hide today. The distinctive large-scute pattern and thick, dimensional texture of sea turtle leather made it one of the most visually dramatic exotics ever used in cowboy boots. Surviving pairs in good condition have become increasingly collectible, and once they leave the secondary market, they’re gone for good.
Condition
These boots are in very good vintage condition. The black sea turtle vamps are glossy and intact with all raised scutes well-defined, securely attached, and showing strong depth and sheen throughout. There is light creasing across the instep and minor wear at the toe tips consistent with careful use. The black leather shafts are supple with the rainbow stitchwork fully intact and crisp on all panels — all thread colors remain vibrant. The leather soles show moderate wear and the black stacked heels remain solid and level. A strong, well-maintained pair with the exotic leather in excellent shape and plenty of life remaining.
